About BMI Calculator

How to Calculate BMI

BMI is calculated the same way for both adults and children. The calculation is based on the following formulas:

Metric Units:

BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m))2

US Units:

BMI = 703 × weight (lb) / (height (in))2

BMI Categories

For adults 20 years old and older, BMI is interpreted using standard weight status categories. These categories are the same for men and women of all body types and ages.

Limitations of BMI

BMI is a useful measurement for most people over 18 years old. But it is only an estimate and it doesn't take into account age, ethnicity, gender and body composition. BMI is not used for muscle builders, long distance athletes, pregnant women, the elderly or young children.
