About the Factor Calculator
The Factor Calculator finds all factors and factor pairs of any positive integer. A factor is a number that divides exactly into another number without leaving a remainder. For example, the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.
How to Find Factors
To find all factors of a number:
- Start with 1 and the number itself
- Check divisibility for numbers up to the square root of the number
- For each divisor found, both the divisor and the quotient are factors
Prime Factorization
Prime factorization breaks down a number into its prime components. For example, the prime factorization of 60 is 2 × 2 × 3 × 5, which can also be written as 2² × 3 × 5.
Factor Pairs
Factor pairs are two numbers that multiply together to give the original number. For example, the factor pairs of 24 are (1, 24), (2, 12), (3, 8), and (4, 6).
Properties of Factors
- Every number has at least two factors: 1 and itself
- Prime numbers have exactly two factors
- Perfect squares have an odd number of factors
- All other numbers have an even number of factors
