GFR Calculator
Estimate your kidney function with our Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) calculator. GFR is the best test to measure your level of kidney function and determine your stage of kidney disease.

About GFR Calculator
Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a test used to check how well the kidneys are working. Specifically, it estimates how much blood passes through the glomeruli each minute. Glomeruli are the tiny filters in the kidneys that filter waste from the blood.
How is GFR Calculated?
GFR is calculated using a formula that includes:
- For adults: Serum creatinine level, age, gender, and race (CKD-EPI equation)
- For children: Serum creatinine level and height (Schwartz equation)
GFR Stages of Kidney Disease
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is divided into five stages based on GFR:
Stage | GFR (mL/min/1.73m²) | Description |
---|---|---|
1 | 90+ | Normal kidney function but urine findings or structural abnormalities suggest kidney disease |
2 | 60-89 | Mildly reduced kidney function |
3a | 45-59 | Mild to moderately reduced kidney function |
3b | 30-44 | Moderate to severely reduced kidney function |
4 | 15-29 | Severely reduced kidney function |
5 | <15 | Kidney failure (end-stage renal disease) |
Limitations of GFR Estimation
Estimated GFR (eGFR) is not perfect and has some limitations:
- May be less accurate for people at extremes of muscle mass (bodybuilders or amputees)
- Not valid for pregnant women
- May be less accurate for people with rapidly changing creatinine levels
- Not suitable for people on dialysis
