About the Healthy Weight Calculator
The Healthy Weight Calculator uses Body Mass Index (BMI) adjusted for age and gender to assess whether a child or teen is at a healthy weight. BMI-for-age is the most widely used screening tool for identifying potential weight problems in children aged 2 to 18 years.
How BMI-for-age is Calculated
BMI-for-age is calculated using the following steps:
- Calculate BMI using the formula: weight (kg) / [height (m)]²
- Compare the BMI value to growth charts for children of the same age and gender
- Determine the percentile ranking based on WHO growth standards
BMI-for-age Categories
Children and teens fall into one of four categories based on their BMI-for-age percentile:
- Underweight: Less than the 5th percentile
- Healthy weight: 5th percentile to less than the 85th percentile
- Overweight: 85th to less than the 95th percentile
- Obese: Equal to or greater than the 95th percentile
Why BMI-for-age Matters
BMI-for-age is an important screening tool because:
- It can identify potential weight problems that may lead to health issues
- It accounts for normal variations in body fat at different ages
- It provides an early warning sign for potential obesity-related health risks
