About Lean Body Mass Calculator
Lean Body Mass (LBM) is the portion of your body weight that is not fat. It includes muscles, bones, organs, and water. Knowing your LBM can help you track fitness progress, set realistic weight loss goals, and determine appropriate nutritional needs.
How to Calculate Lean Body Mass
There are several methods to calculate LBM:
- Using Body Fat Percentage: LBM = Total Weight × (100 - Body Fat %) / 100
- Boer Formula: For men: LBM = 0.407 × weight(kg) + 0.267 × height(cm) - 19.2; For women: LBM = 0.252 × weight(kg) + 0.473 × height(cm) - 48.3
- James Formula: For men: LBM = 1.1 × weight(kg) - 128 × (weight²/(100 × height(m))²); For women: LBM = 1.07 × weight(kg) - 148 × (weight²/(100 × height(m))²)
Our calculator uses the body fat percentage method as it's the most accurate when you know your body fat percentage.
Why Lean Body Mass Matters
Understanding your LBM is important for:
- Fitness Tracking: Muscle gain shows as increased LBM
- Weight Loss: Helps distinguish between fat loss and muscle loss
- Nutrition Planning: Protein needs are based on LBM
- Metabolic Rate: LBM is a key factor in determining your BMR
