About Paper Sizes
This paper size converter helps you convert between international standard paper sizes (ISO A, B, C series) and North American paper sizes (Letter, Legal, Tabloid). It provides accurate dimensions in millimeters, inches, and centimeters, along with visual comparisons.
ISO Standard Paper Sizes
The ISO 216 standard defines the A, B, and C series of paper sizes, which are used internationally:
- A Series: The most common series, used for general printing and office documents. A4 (210 × 297 mm) is the standard business letter size in most countries.
- B Series: Sizes between the A series, often used for posters, books, and envelopes.
- C Series: Used for envelopes to fit A series paper. For example, a C4 envelope fits an A4 sheet unfolded.
All ISO paper sizes maintain an aspect ratio of √2:1 (approximately 1.414). This means when you fold a sheet in half parallel to its shorter sides, you get the next smaller size with the same proportions.
North American Paper Sizes
In the United States, Canada, and some other countries, different paper sizes are commonly used:
- Letter (8.5 × 11 inches): The standard for business and academic documents.
- Legal (8.5 × 14 inches): Used for legal documents.
- Tabloid (11 × 17 inches): Used for newspapers and larger format documents.
Unlike ISO sizes, North American sizes don't maintain a consistent aspect ratio when halved.
Paper Size Conversion
When converting between paper sizes, it's important to consider:
- Dimensions: The actual width and height measurements.
- Aspect Ratio: The proportional relationship between width and height.
- Area: The total surface area of the paper, which affects weight and postage costs.
This tool helps you understand these relationships and visualize how different sizes compare to each other.
