About RMD Calculator
A Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) is the minimum amount you must withdraw from your retirement account each year. You generally have to start taking withdrawals from your IRA, SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA, or retirement plan account when you reach age 72 (73 if you reach age 72 after Dec. 31, 2022). Roth IRAs do not require withdrawals until after the death of the owner.
How to Calculate RMD
To calculate your RMD:
- Determine your account balance as of December 31 of the previous year
- Find the distribution period (life expectancy factor) from the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table based on your age
- Divide your account balance by the distribution period
RMD Rules
- You must take your first RMD by April 1 of the year following the year you turn 72 (or 73 if applicable)
- For subsequent years, you must take the RMD by December 31 of each year
- If you have multiple retirement accounts, you must calculate the RMD for each account separately but can withdraw the total amount from one or more accounts
- Failure to take the full RMD may result in a 25% excise tax on the amount not withdrawn (reduced to 10% if corrected within 2 years)
Special Cases
Spouse as sole beneficiary: If your spouse is more than 10 years younger than you and is the sole beneficiary of your IRA, you may use the Joint Life and Last Survivor Expectancy Table which typically results in a smaller RMD.
Inherited IRAs: Different rules apply for inherited retirement accounts, which are not covered by this calculator.
