Creatinine Clearance Calculator (Cockcroft-Gault Equation)
Calculate creatinine clearance and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using the Cockcroft-Gault equation to assess kidney function and adjust drug dosing in adults.
Your Results
Creatinine Clearance (CrCl) | 0 mL/min |
---|---|
Estimated GFR (eGFR) | 0 mL/min/1.73m² |
Renal Function | - |
Drug Dosing Adjustments:
CrCl Range | Dosing Adjustment |
---|---|
>50 mL/min | Normal dosing |
30-50 mL/min | Reduce dose by 25-50% |
10-30 mL/min | Reduce dose by 50-75% |
<10 mL/min | Avoid or use extreme caution |
About Creatinine Clearance Calculator
The creatinine clearance (CrCl) calculator estimates kidney function based on the Cockcroft-Gault equation, which uses serum creatinine, age, weight, and gender to calculate the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). This helps assess renal function and adjust medication dosages for drugs that are excreted by the kidneys.
Cockcroft-Gault Equation
The calculator uses the following equations:
- For men: CrCl = [(140 - age) × weight (kg)] / [72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)]
- For women: CrCl = [(140 - age) × weight (kg) × 0.85] / [72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)]
For creatinine in μmol/L, multiply the result by 0.0113.
Renal Function Classification
The calculator classifies renal function based on creatinine clearance:
- Normal: ≥90 mL/min
- Mild impairment: 60-89 mL/min
- Moderate impairment: 30-59 mL/min
- Severe impairment: 15-29 mL/min
- Kidney failure: <15 mL/min or on dialysis
Clinical Uses
Creatinine clearance is used to:
- Assess kidney function in chronic kidney disease
- Adjust drug dosages for renally excreted medications
- Monitor for nephrotoxicity from medications or contrast dyes
- Evaluate progression of kidney disease
Limitations
The Cockcroft-Gault equation has some limitations:
- Less accurate in very obese or very thin patients
- May overestimate GFR in elderly patients with reduced muscle mass
- Not validated in children, pregnant women, or patients with rapidly changing creatinine
- Doesn't account for race/ethnicity differences
